Emtricitabine/EMTRIVA is an NRTI that was approved in 2006. It is one of the most commonly prescribed HIV medications and is extremely well tolerated in almost all patients.  It is part of  the triple therapy pills, ATRIPLA, COMPLERA, EVIPLERA and the quad pill STRIBILD.  Take once a day with or without food.  There are lower cost generic versions of emitricitabine available worldwide. Emitricitabine is also combined with tenofovir disoproxil fumerate to make the drug TRUVADA that is used for PrEP and part of PEP for the prevention of HIV transmission.
